The group wins second place at a talent night competition at the Strand Theatre. Formed in 1978, the group is initially made up of Roxbury teenagers Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Bobby Brown, who worked first with choreographer Brooke Payne. After the Strand event, they sign with manager Maurice Starr, who adds Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant to the group. Their first album is released in in 1983,* and Brown is replaced by Johnny Gill in 1986. A documentary on the group is released in 2017, and it begins a reunion tour in 2022.*
